QUAKES DAMAGES SOME 28,000 HOUSES IN BENGKULU

BENGKULU (Antara): Some 28,000 dwellings have been damaged in the series of powerful earthquakes that hit the province and nearby West Sumatra in the past week, according to data from the Bengkulu Mitigation Agency coordinating unit.
Bengkulu governor Agusrin Maryono Najamuddin said Thursday the data was still being verified by the Army's Special Forces (Kopassus).
"The verification shows the number is increasing," he said.
On Thursday evening data revealed 7,905 houses had been thoroughly destroyed and 6,745 severely damaged. More than 13,000 houses suffered minor damage. The total number of damaged houses was 27,834.
Damaged houses were found in seven regencies in the province, including hardest-hit North Bengkulu with 2,338 houses destroyed, 4,368 with major damage and 4,750 with minor damage.
In Muko-Muko regency 5,334 houses were destroyed, 709 suffered major damage and 3,369 suffered minor damage.
The quakes, which began Wednesday last week and measured up to 7.9 on the Richter scale, killed 23 people and injured 88 others.
Mitigation unit data from neighboring West Sumatra showed total losses of $US133.3 million. Loss estimates for Bengkulu were not yet available. (**)
